I own the "pouty" one, the third one down with the orange dress. Only mine has a yellow dress, white skin, and no freckles. The body shape and expression is exactly the same. It was given to me when I was about 3 or 4 ('78 or '79). Whenever I started acting ornery and pouty, my mom would pick the doll up and say, "You don't wanna look like HER do you?"

"The guy I bought them from claimed they are “rare dolls from the 70s” (if that’s the case, why’d they cost a buck each?)."

Hey, just because they're "rare dolls from the 70s" doesn't mean the guy wants those creepy things in his house! "Rare" is a condition, i.e. of being hard to find. A condition that doesn't always translate into "expensive." Sometimes it just means "unpopular!"

No one seems to know a lot about them. My sister says they were made by the Imperial Crown Toy Company, which partly seems to be supported by this article I found (complete with a grainy photo of the sassy redhead doll...) http://www.bigredtoybox.com/articles/sassyindex.shtml

My sister had a set of these when we were growing up in the 70's. There is another one - a sassy redhead poking out her tounge. I'll check with her, but I think they were called weekday girls or something like that. There was a different emotion for each day of the week

Well, it's good to have a bit more info. We now know they came around in the 70s. Thanks Elb. I'll let you know if I find out any more about these little girls.

It's odd to me that they're all so unhappy... except the pink one... who just seems a little bit stoned.
